Dive Computer Buying Checklist
Ignore the longest feature list. Buy the computer whose display, battery, gas support, algorithm controls, form factor and service model fit the diving you actually do.
1. Start with your diving, not the product
Write down what you do now: air or nitrox, warm or cold water, travel or local, rental or owned regulators, recreational or formally trained technical diving. That immediately removes dozens of irrelevant features.
2. Pick the form factor
Wrist computers are the flexible default for travel and rental gear. Console computers suit divers who own their regulator and prefer a hose-mounted instrument cluster. Watch-style units trade some screen area for daily wear, GPS and fitness features.
3. Check the four numbers you need to read
At minimum, confirm that depth, NDL, ascent information and stop guidance are obvious to you. If using air integration, tank pressure should also be easy to locate. Do not buy a computer whose interface looks clever but takes too long to interpret.
4. Decide color vs monochrome

For travelers: compact form, common charging, battery endurance, easy strap replacement, nitrox, Bluetooth logs and rental-regulator independence are high-value features.
10. Service and support
Look for a current manual, firmware support, replacement straps, battery/service options and a dealer or manufacturer you can actually reach. A dive computer is a long-term instrument.
11. Do not pay for training you do not have
Trimix, CCR and planned decompression modes are legitimate features for trained users. They are not a reason for a new recreational diver to spend more.
12. Price the whole system
If the computer needs a transmitter, proprietary charger, interface cable, screen protector or bungee mount for your intended setup, include those costs before comparing models.
13. Learn it before the trip
The best computer is the one you know. Read the manual, configure it at home and identify the NDL, ascent-rate and stop screens before entering the water.

Budget tiers: what usually changes as you spend more
Entry level: basic air/nitrox, monochrome display, simple logging and a replaceable battery are common. Midrange: larger color screens, Bluetooth/app syncing, rechargeable batteries and more flexible interfaces become common. Premium: wireless air integration, multisport smartwatch functions, advanced gas modes, GPS surface features and premium materials appear more often.
