Mask — What It Is and Why It Matters

A dive mask is a sealed lens and skirt assembly that creates an air pocket in front of the eyes, allowing underwater vision. Unlike swim goggles, dive masks enclose the nose so the diver can equalize the air space inside the mask as pressure increases with depth. A good mask seal is the single most important factor in comfort during a dive.

Masks come in single-lens, dual-lens, and panoramic designs. Low-volume masks (less internal airspace) are preferred by freedivers and photographers because they require less air to equalize and reduce refraction. Prescription lenses or bonded corrective inserts are available for divers who need vision correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I test if a mask fits my face?
Place the mask against your face without the strap, look slightly upward, and inhale gently through your nose. The mask should seal and stay in place without the strap holding it. If air leaks in or you need the strap to hold it, the fit is not right for your face shape.
Why does my mask fog up?
New masks have a silicone residue from manufacturing that causes fogging. Treat new masks by scrubbing the inside of the lens with a non-gel toothpaste or mask-specific defogger. Before each dive, apply commercial defog solution, baby shampoo, or saliva, then rinse lightly.
