Rescue Diver — What It Is and Why It Matters

Rescue Diver is a certification focused on stress management, emergency recognition, and rescue skills. It teaches divers to prevent and manage problems underwater and on the surface — including panicking divers, unresponsive divers, missing divers, and in-water first aid. A current first aid and CPR certification (like EFR or equivalent) is a prerequisite.

Many divers describe Rescue as the most challenging but most rewarding course in recreational diving. It fundamentally changes how you think about diving — from focusing on yourself to being aware of your buddy and the group. It is a prerequisite for the Divemaster course and professional-level training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an expert diver to take the Rescue course?
No, but you should be a comfortable and competent diver. Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) and a first aid certification are prerequisites. You should have enough logged dives to handle yourself well in the water so you can focus on learning rescue skills rather than struggling with basic diving.
Is the Rescue Diver course physically demanding?
Yes, more so than previous courses. Towing distressed divers, performing in-water rescue breathing, and managing simulated emergency scenarios require reasonable physical fitness. It is demanding but achievable for divers in average physical condition.
