Speargun rigging — the configuration of bands, shaft, and shooting line — determines your weapon's performance characteristics: range, power, accuracy, and reload speed. A properly rigged gun delivers the shaft to the target with consistent velocity and accuracy across repeated shots. An improperly rigged gun misfires, shoots inaccurately, tangles shooting line during critical moments, or breaks bands mid-loading when rubber fatigue exceeds its capacity. Understanding the components and their interactions allows you to configure your gun for specific hunting conditions rather than accepting the factory default setup that may not match your target species, visibility conditions, or water environment.

Band Selection and Sizing

Rubber band diameter and length determine the power delivered to the shaft during firing. Standard band diameters range from fourteen millimeters (light pull, suitable for small reef fish with short guns in close-range hunting scenarios) to twenty millimeters (heavy pull, designed for large pelagic targets with long guns where penetration at distance is the primary requirement). Band length is calculated from the muzzle to the shaft loading notch — the band must stretch to approximately three hundred percent of its resting length when the gun is fully loaded. Shorter than three hundred percent stretch under-powers the shot and reduces range. Longer than three hundred percent over-stresses the rubber compound and causes premature fatigue, cracking, and catastrophic failure during loading.

For a gun with a seventy-five-centimeter barrel, a typical band resting length is approximately fifty centimeters — stretching to approximately one hundred fifty centimeters (the barrel length minus the muzzle overhang) at full load. Band rubber composition affects both performance and longevity in the field. Pure latex bands provide the fastest contraction speed (highest shaft velocity for a given stretch ratio) but degrade quickly from UV exposure and ozone contact — expect three to six months of active-use lifespan before replacement is required. Blended rubber compounds sacrifice some contraction speed for significantly improved durability — lasting six to twelve months under similar use conditions. Always carry spare pre-cut, pre-tied replacement bands for field swaps — a broken band at the dive site cancels the hunt completely unless you carry a ready spare.

Shaft Selection and Configuration

Shaft diameter affects penetration depth, flight accuracy, and trajectory stability through the water. Standard six-point-five-millimeter shafts are adequate for most reef species — they penetrate cleanly through fish scales and tissue, fly accurately over short reef-hunting distances, and are light enough for the modest power of a single-band gun. Seven-to-eight-millimeter shafts provide greater penetration capability on larger, harder-scaled species but require proportionally more band power to achieve the same shaft velocity and are heavier in flight (more affected by water resistance over distance, which reduces effective range compared to lighter shafts at the same power level). For bluewater hunting of large pelagic species, heavy shafts with slip tips and braided cable connections are the standard configuration — the increased shaft mass carries greater momentum through thick-bodied fish and the detachable slip tip prevents shaft damage during the powerful escape runs that large pelagic species produce after being struck.

Shooting Line Configuration

Shooting line connects the shaft to the gun (and ultimately to the diver through the float line system) so that a successfully speared fish cannot swim away with your shaft and your catch. Monofilament shooting line (heavy-test fishing line, typically two hundred to four hundred pound test) is simple, inexpensive, and causes minimal drag on the shaft during flight through the water. The disadvantage is memory — monofilament retains coils and curls after being stored wound on the gun, and a tangled shooting line during a shot can redirect the shaft off target or create a dangerous loop that catches on equipment during the firing sequence. Dyneema braid shooting line eliminates memory issues (zero coiling, lies flat and deploys cleanly), provides higher strength-to-diameter ratio (less water resistance and drag on the shaft during flight), and offers greater abrasion resistance against reef contact during fish fights.

Line length should be approximately twice the shaft length plus ten feet of additional run — this provides enough slack for the shaft to fly to maximum range plus extension as a speared fish pulls away from the gun before the line loads against the float line connection and begins absorbing the fish's escape energy. Too short a shooting line jerks the shaft prematurely during a long shot, reducing penetration and potentially tearing the shaft free from the fish. Too long creates excess line that tangles during deployment and creates loops that snag on reef structure during fish fights.

Muzzle Configuration and Shaft Loading

Open-muzzle guns allow the shaft to rest in an open track along the top of the barrel — loading is straightforward (lay the shaft in the track channel, pull the rubber bands to the shaft loading notch, and engage them) and the shaft exits the track with minimal friction during firing. Enclosed-track muzzles guide the shaft through a tube or channel that constrains lateral shaft movement during the first critical centimeters of flight, improving accuracy at distance but adding friction that reduces shaft velocity slightly and limiting the shaft to a single diameter that fits the enclosed track precisely. For reef hunting at close range (three to six meters), either muzzle type performs acceptably. For longer-range shots in bluewater where accuracy at distance matters more than close-range convenience, an enclosed track that eliminates initial shaft wobble produces noticeably tighter shot groupings at extended range.

Multi-Band Setups

Adding a second or third band to a speargun dramatically increases shaft velocity and penetration power at the cost of significantly increased loading effort and a wider power band that makes the gun less forgiving of aiming errors. Double-band setups are standard for medium to large guns (ninety centimeters and above) hunting medium-sized reef fish where increased penetration ensures clean kills on species with thick scales or hard gill plates. Triple-band setups are reserved for large bluewater guns targeting tuna, wahoo, and other large pelagic species where maximum penetration through thick muscle and bone is essential for a lethal hit.

When adding bands, all bands should be the same diameter, length, and rubber compound to ensure they contract at the same rate and deliver equal force to the shaft simultaneously. Mismatched bands (different diameters or different rubber ages with different elasticity) cause uneven loading that pushes the shaft off-axis during acceleration, reducing accuracy and creating a curved flight path that misses the aim point even with correct sight alignment. Replace all bands on a multi-band gun simultaneously — even if only one band shows visible wear — to maintain matched performance across the entire power system.

Float Line and Reel Integration

The float line connects your gun (via the shooting line) to a surface float that marks your position, provides a drag resistance against escaping fish, and ensures your gun and catch are recoverable if you become separated from your equipment during a fish fight. Float line length depends on your hunting depth — a line that is too short does not reach the bottom at your hunting depth, limiting your range. A line that is too long creates excess slack that tangles around reef structure and your own body during dynamic fish fights where both you and the fish are moving rapidly through the water column. Standard float line lengths range from ten meters for shallow reef hunting to thirty meters for deep wall and bluewater hunting scenarios.
