VIP & Hydro: Tank Inspection Cycles Explained

How visual inspections and hydrostatic testing keep scuba tanks safe — schedules, procedures, and what happens when a tank fails.

Every scuba tank is a pressure vessel holding thousands of PSI of compressed gas inches from your spine. The two mandatory inspection programs — annual visual inspection (VIP) and five-year hydrostatic testing (hydro) — exist to catch the internal and structural degradation that is invisible from the outside before it becomes a catastrophic failure. Understanding what each inspection involves, why the schedules exist, and what the results mean makes you a more informed tank owner and a safer diver.

Visual Inspection (VIP)

A visual inspection is an annual internal and external examination performed by a certified visual inspector. The inspector removes the tank valve (which requires depressurizing the tank completely), illuminates the tank interior with a high-intensity light, and examines every surface for signs of damage, corrosion, and contamination. In aluminum tanks, the inspector looks for white aluminum oxide powder (a sign of moisture intrusion and oxidation), pitting on the interior wall surface, thread damage at the neck where the valve seats, and any deformation of the tank body or neck that suggests impact damage or overpressure. In steel tanks, the primary concerns are rust (iron oxide from moisture contact), pitting that reduces wall thickness, and the red-brown discoloration that indicates active corrosion is consuming the tank wall from the inside.

The external inspection checks for dents, gouges, deep scratches, heat discoloration (which indicates the tank has been exposed to fire or extreme temperature), and corrosion at the boot ring area where moisture collects between the tank base and the rubber boot. Tanks stored upright with boots collect moisture at the boot-to-tank interface, and this trapped saltwater or condensation creates a corrosion environment that is invisible unless the boot is removed during inspection. A thorough VIP always includes boot removal and inspection of the tank base.

A tank that passes VIP receives a dated inspection sticker — a visual indicator to fill station operators that the tank has been inspected within the past twelve months and is approved for filling. Most dive shops will not fill a tank without a current VIP sticker, and many compressor operators are personally liable for filling a tank that subsequently fails — this liability drives strict adherence to the VIP requirement at reputable fill stations.

Hydrostatic Testing (Hydro)

Hydrostatic testing evaluates the structural integrity of the tank by subjecting it to pressures significantly above its rated working pressure and measuring how the tank responds to the stress. The test procedure fills the tank completely with water (water is virtually incompressible, so a water-filled tank that fails releases water rather than the explosive gas release that would occur if the tank were pressurized with air), places the water-filled tank in a sealed water jacket (a container of water that surrounds the tank and measures its expansion), and pressurizes the tank to five-thirds of its working pressure — for a 3,000 PSI tank, the test pressure is 5,000 PSI.

Under this extreme pressure, the tank expands — the metal walls stretch outward measurably. The water jacket captures and measures this expansion by recording the volume of water displaced from the jacket as the tank expands. When the pressure is released, the tank should return to its original dimensions — this elastic recovery indicates the metal is healthy and retains its structural properties. The critical measurement is permanent expansion — the amount of expansion that does not recover when pressure is released. If permanent expansion exceeds ten percent of total expansion, the tank fails the hydro test. Permanent expansion indicates that the metal has undergone plastic deformation — it has been stretched beyond its ability to return to its original shape, which means the crystal structure of the metal has been permanently altered and the tank's resistance to future pressure cycles is compromised.

A failed hydro test condemns the tank — it cannot legally be filled, used, or sold for diving use. The testing facility stamps a star or X through the test date on the tank shoulder to indicate failure and condemns the tank permanently. There is no re-test option — a tank that fails hydro has demonstrated that its metal properties no longer meet the safety requirements for containing high-pressure gas.

Inspection Schedules and Compliance

The standard schedule is straightforward — VIP annually, hydro every five years. The hydro schedule runs from the original manufacture date (stamped on the tank shoulder) and continues at five-year intervals regardless of use frequency. A tank that has been sitting unused in a garage for ten years still requires two hydro tests (the missed five-year test and the current ten-year test) before it can be returned to service — age alone does not satisfy the testing requirement because corrosion and material degradation occur even in idle tanks if storage conditions are imperfect.

Some jurisdictions and diving environments impose stricter schedules. Technical diving operations may require annual hydro testing for tanks exposed to enriched air (nitrox and trimix) because the higher oxygen concentrations accelerate certain corrosion mechanisms. Military and commercial diving programs often require more frequent inspections based on use cycles rather than calendar intervals. Know the inspection requirements for your jurisdiction and your diving community — the baseline schedule of annual VIP and five-year hydro is the minimum standard, not necessarily the appropriate standard for every diving application.

Cost and Where to Get Inspections

VIP costs are modest per tank and are typically performed at dive shops with certified inspectors — the inspection takes fifteen to thirty minutes per tank and can usually be completed while you wait or within a day. Hydro testing requires specialized equipment (the pressurization system, water jacket, and calibrated measurement instruments) that most dive shops do not possess — tanks are sent to certified testing facilities (which may be stand-alone businesses or departments within larger industrial testing companies). Turnaround for hydro testing ranges from a few days to several weeks depending on the testing facility's workload and location. Plan hydro testing during the off-season rather than the week before a dive trip — a tank that fails hydro is condemned immediately, and replacing it takes time that a trip deadline does not accommodate.

Reading Tank Stamps

Every scuba tank carries stamped information on the shoulder crown — the flat ring at the top of the tank body. This stamping includes the manufacturer's identification, the serial number, the working pressure rating, the material specification, the original manufacture date, and the dates of subsequent hydrostatic tests. Learning to read these stamps lets you quickly assess a tank's history — age, test compliance, working pressure, and material type — without documentation. The manufacture date is typically stamped as month and year (e.g., 03-18 for March 2018). Hydro test dates follow the same format and are added sequentially around the crown after each test. If the most recent hydro date is more than five years old, the tank requires testing before it can be filled. If a star or X is stamped through any date, the tank failed that test and is condemned.
